The director is using color on the characters' clothes, cars, and houses. It can help with the time period. Yes, color is symbolic. Color can symbolize how you or someone else is feeling.
Nicole P: Color is used in The Graduate to show the contrast between what society perceives to be morally right and wrong. Mrs. Robinson is almost always wearing black which shows that she is the wrong choice and that Ben shouldn't be with her. One scene that really shows this is after Ben tells Elaine that he and Mrs. Robinson have slept together. Mrs. Robinson is in the corner of two white walls wearing an all black dress and black eye makeup. This shows that when you finally see the whole picture, you can weed out the bad. At the end of the film Elaine is in a wedding dress which shows that she was the right choice all along. The contrast between Elaine and Mrs. Robinson through color is very sudden yet effective at the same time.
Megan Ruckel: I noticed in The Graduate Ben’s car was red. Red symbolizes either a warning, danger, or distress, which I found ironic because Ben is a chaotic character who causes pain in himself and other characters. Not only that, Red is used for stop signs and pausing. This might be slightly over-analyzed, but I noticed that every time Ben drove, he would come to these violent and aggressive stops before something important happened, like he was moving too fast in his life at that moment or acting on an impulsive action that caused him to come to this distressed, dangerous, and aggressive stops.
Color plays an important role in the movie The Graduate, as it shows the emotions that each character in the movie has. For example, we can see how Mrs Robinson uses dark colors like black or gray showing how unhappy she is and that she does not like her life. On the other hand, we can see how Elaine uses light colors highlighting her beauty and her youth. Also, the fact that Benjamin's car is red means that his life is full of problems and that wherever he goes, his bad decisions will always haunt him and his problems will never end.
COlor plays a very essentail role in the movie. Colors can be displayed as either being very vibrant and lively, awhile at other times, colors can be displayed as being very dull. For example, his car is very red and the color pallete really exposes its red color and it stands out. I believe it is this way to represent his escape from the world and a place where he can just relax and get around. FOr the most part, it seems like he really enjoys riding around in that car, and it is a very nice car. However, color can be seen to be dull here at times too. FOr instance, his clothing. His clothing is nerver really anything special, and it is as if it is representing the dull boring life that everyone is striving for him to follow.
The colors black and white are often used to resemble conformity and society while the bright and vibrant colors resemble rebellion. Often we see black and white are used when our protagonist Ben is contemplating life and his choices, worrying about his future. It’s also used in the last scene when Elaine is getting married, they use black and white to symbolize how getting married to Carl would be the societal path.
